Is anyone else getting the impression that Dana Cowin's appearances are...sort of.....throw aways? What was the point of her involvement in this episode? Anyone?

To strike fear into the hearts of the chefs? They didn't know she was going to slip off the radar by the end of the episode. She must have something on Tom....
I have no idea. They had that Ludo guy (who was twice as hard to understand as Ripert) as guest judge. She must have naked pictures of Padma. No, wait, we all have those.
I bet it's in some contract somewhere that because the magazine she edits features so heavily in the prize package, that she has to make a certain number of appearances on the show per season. And I'd bet she's busy enough to not really have time to do more than show up and eat.
