What the Heck is a Jumblee?


Chow has a fascinating look at a very old, handwritten cookbook. Ever wonder what people used to eat, what kind of ingredients were available and what people's favorite treats were? My question is will anyone be able to read your handwriting in 120 years from now?

    I have a community cookbook of my grandmothers from the 30s. There are ads in it. The most interesting one is a female undertaker for you lady corpses.

    Yes Froggy, because when you want to whip up a batch of your favorite cookies you also want to think about the best person to embalm your loved ones.

    That Jumbalee looks like it would be awfully dry. Maybe it's some kind of crumb cake? In the recipes cited, there's 1 cup of sugar in everything.

    Looks like my grandma's handwriting.

    She used to use recipes as guides - but at just about every step she'd point out "no, you don't actually do it THAT way, you do THIS instead." Spo her recipes, as written, would not be an accurate reflection of how she cooked. LOL
